This variety is an an American type of Brussels Sprout . It was first produced on Long Island in New York State. American style brussels Sprouts are usually larger than European varieties. This variety will produce sprouts that are from 2.5-5cm in diameter with good taste and firm tight sprouts. Brussels sprouts were first known in Roman times but came to prominence around the 1500s in Belgium, from where they spread to the rest of the world. The seeds should be planted 0.5-1.0cm deep in rich well limed soil. They should be spaced about 50cm apart in rows about 1m apart. In cool and temperate areas the months from October to February are when the plants will do best and in tropical and subtropical areas the months from February to June. The sprouts will be mature in about 90 days. For the best flavour care should be taken to pick them before they become loose.
