ONION - PURPLETTE

Allium cepa

This popular heirloom, is a glossy purple red coloured medium

sized slightly sweet bulb that makes an excellent option for

eating raw on sandwiches and in salads.

Sow in Spring so the bulbs have a chance to grow large bulbs

Onions like well limed soil rich in organic matter. It is best to

start onions in seed trays and transplant into the garden when

10-15 cm high  to beat the weeds, snails and other

garden pests. Dig the trenches 10 -15 cm wide, 5cm deep and

then add fertiliser along the side of the trenches. Refill the

trench and sow the seed in the centre of the previous

trench. Space the seedlings approximately 10cm apart,

with a space of 30 cm between each row. The onions will

be ready for pulling and storing approximately 6 to 7

months from sowing the seed when the tops begin drying.
