Pastinaca sativa
White Gem is a medium length parsnip with solid deep flesh with fine texture and smooth white skin that is easily cleaned. It performs well in most climatic areas suitable for parsnips and does well in all soils that are prone to heaviness as well as lighter soils. This variety also shows some resistance to parsnip diseases such as canker.
Parsnip seed should be sown soon after receiving it as it does not keep well. Germination is aided by storing in the fridge for 10 days prior to planting Planting Instructions: Depth of seed 0.5-1cm deep Spaced 8-10cm apart. Rows 35-50cm apart Sowing Time: Tropics from March to May Subtropics from February to September Temperate from July to March Cold areas from August to February Parsnips do not like extremely hot weather and they will do very well in frosty conditions. Frost changes the sugars in the plant making the roots sweeter to the taste buds.
