CUCUZINI SQUASH 

Legenaria siceraria

This edible gourd is not true squash nor a zuccini. It is a vigorous climber and needs strong support. It should be eaten like a zucchini and at about the size of a zucchini but not longer than 45 cm. It will grow to over 1m in length. It grows best in full sun or in warm areas. This is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world with the first known plantings from 7,000BCE It is an edible gourd that has claims to healing properties. It is excellent for low calorie diets, diabetics and convalescents: is cooling and calming,a diuretic and easily digested. It is rich in vitamin C, and the B complex and rich in Iron. It is used like zucchini when 20-40cm long and ideal in curries stir fries and grated into quiches. It is a vigorous vine to 6m which must be planted after frosts have passed. It can be grown all year round in tropical and subtropical areas and tolerates wet conditions well.

Plant the seeds 2-3cm deep in rich damp soil and keep moist until germination occurrs. It needs a tall teepee structure, a wall, high fence or trees to climb on. The fruit will grow to 1m long and can be dried and decorated like a bottle gourd. It should sell well at farmers markets. Also called Guinea Bean and also called Cucuzini
