Lactuca sativa
Red Oakleaf lettuce has wonderful burgundy red coloured leaves with green veins and green towards the centre of the stem. Full sun will enhance the red colour. It shows some resistance to heat and exhibits good leaf regrowth after cutting outer leaves. Baby leaves can be cut in 28 days. This variety is fully matured in 50 days. Lettuces like to be grown in mild conditions and do not like hot weather. They should be sown often to ensure a continuous supply.
Sow the seeds very shallowly and rake in lighlty. Keep the soil moist for the continued life of the plant and you will be rewarded with lovely salad greens. Any dryness will result in bitter leaves and bolting will result. Sow in all months in mild areas and cease sowing during mid winter in cold areas. Cease sowing during hot conditions or whenever they can be expected to arise. Lettuces grow well under trees where they receive dappled shade.
