Atriplex hortensis

Red Orach is a short spinach like plant with beautiful pinkish-red leaves. It becomes more erect as it matures and will eventually reach 1.5 m tall. This hardy annual, also known as Mountain Spinach, was once commonly grown in the vegetable garden as a substitute for common spinach. It produce hundreds of medium sized attractive and tasty leaves. The leaves are indented and the mature plant resembles a small red tree. Sow seeds 1 cm deep in rows 60 cm apart, in the soil, in spring through to mid summer. Water freely to encourage quick growth. Pinch out the flower heads of the plants which can also be eaten in stirfries. A full sun position is best.
