Now you can make your own Earl Grey tea at the strenght you really enjoy. This lovely clumping plant grows to 30-60 cm high and produces masses of lovely scented foliage and beautiful mauve to pink flowers. The leaves of this plant can be used to flavour tea which tastes very similar to the 'Earl Grey Tea' one can purchase in stores. Just cut the stems at the base and hang in a corner of the ktichen until dry and rub between your palms to crush the brittle leaves and throw them into your favourite black tea just before boiling the water for your cuppa. The plant is very attractive to bees, butterflies and some nectar loving birds. It is suitable for full sun or semi shaded areas and does very well in pots. It is often grown for use a s a cut flower becuase not only is it very attractive but it lasts well as a cut flower and keeps as a dried flower and is has a lovely fragrance and holds it colour too. It was used to flavour game meat by the Native Americans in whose lands it is a native plant. It tolerates most soils but prefers free draning soil. Sow after the last frost in spring in temperate areas and keep moist for the first three weeks until the seeds germinate.
