Chrysanthemum cinerarifolium
The pyrethrum daisy is probably most well known for its insect repellent properties. It grows from 50-100cm tall; has blue-green, feathery leaves with white petalled, yellow centred flowers on long stems. Pyrethrum is considered one of the safest insecticides for use around food as it breaks down rapidly in sunlight. It makes a great companion plant and is especially prized for use in repelling insect pests from nearby crops. It is especially effective with broccoli and other brassica vegetables.
Seeds are best started indoors around August or September and planted 1 cm deep in a sterilised mix kept at around 20-22C. They take 15-30 days to germinate and need about 12 weeks from planting until transplanting in the garden. Pyrethrum will grow well in relatively poor soil and dry conditions. It does best is soil with a little added lime.
