Remove the leaves which can be used for lettuce soup or salads, split the stem from top to bottom and it is ready to eat. Serve it as you would celery but easier to grow.   This plant is widely used in Asia.

Celtuce is a type of lettuce which is grown for its fleshy stem which is used in a variety of ways. Cut at the right moment, celtuce is crisp and crunchy with a slightly bitter taste, similar to chicory or endive. Stems should be cut for the table when they are 25-30cm high. Remove the leaves (they can be used for lettuce soup or salads), split the stem from top to bottom and it is ready to eat. Serve it as you would celery. Only easier to grow!

Seed can be direct sown into moist soil, or into seedling trays. Transplant the sme as you would lettuce when 2.5cm high.  For best results the soil should be approximately 15C.  Grow in part shade or full sun.  Celtuce makes for a good follow on crop after peas or broad beans as it will benefit from thir nitrogen fixing activity.
